Northern Minnesota flooding causes Boundary Waters chaos, steelhead losses

When Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness campers Nole Oltesvig and Rylan Kollberg left their tent to survey the aftermath of a rainstorm June 19, at first they encountered heavy sediment buildup where they’d intended to launch their canoe at the Big Lake public access. Then they noticed a boulder or two at the landing which, Oltesvig said, seemed peculiar.
Then they saw what was left of the road after likely more than 7 inches of rain had drenched the area, washed out the access road while leaving a boulder path in its wake, and, at least temporarily, stranding the 36-year-olds from Wisconsin.

Minnesota’s public waters inventory list to be updated, per legislation

Randall Doneen, Minnesota DNR conservation assistance and regulation section manager for the Ecological and Water Resources Division, will lead the eight-year effort to update the map and list, county by county.

Flooding in southern Minnesota impacting angling, wildlife

If you talked to Minnesota fish and wildlife managers in early May, the scuttlebutt revolved around one word: drought. What a difference a few weeks – and several inches of rain throughout the region – makes.
Lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands south of the Twin Cities are rising and flooding local communities, agricultural fields, and state and federal lands after roughly two weeks of persistent and sometimes heavy rains that dumped more than 10 inches in some parts of southern Minnesota.
