Outdoor Insights: Here are the details of the closure of Minnesota’s Hill Annex Mine State Park

Outdoor News devoted ample space to the transfer of Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the local tribal community in February, so to be consistent, I couldn’t let the recent press release from the Minnesota DNR regarding the closing of Hill Annex Mine State Park go without asking some follow-up questions.
The agency announced last week that the state is de-authorizing the 625-acre property between Grand Rapids and Virginia as a state park, and it will again become a working, privately-operated mine.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness clarifies dog leash rules

The U.S. Forest Service added new language to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness permitting last spring, indicating that dogs must be on a leash of 6 feet or less while in developed recreation sites.
The change raised questions about whether the rule applies during bird-hunting seasons, when most dogs are off-leash trying to flush birds. Cathleen Quinn, the U.S. Forest Service’s wilderness program manager, clarified the rule and eased the concerns of those bringing hunting dogs or pets to the BWCAW.

Gear & Gadgets: Latitude Outdoors’ Carbon SS climbing sticks perfect for mobile hunters

This proprietary carbon fiber technology was originally developed for aerospace and automotive applications. One of the first applications was structural components on airplanes.
They needed a material that was ultralight, durable and could withstand extreme temperature changes (think about taking off from a 120 degree runway in Arizona and then being in cold temperatures at 30,000 ft in a matter of minutes). That’s why this carbon fiber tech is perfect for mobile hunting gear.

Backyard and Beyond: Capturing some early-summer tales of wildlife

A recipe for possible disaster: A mother duck leads her ducklings toward a river’s shoreline. A coyote lopes down for a drink, discovers the duck family, and thinks it’s found an easy meal.
As Cliff Price watched, the mother duck strongly objected, flapping her wings and squawking loudly.
