DNR launches 3-year deer research project in northeastern Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR is starting a three-year research project to study whitetail populations in the northeastern part of the state. The project will use trail cameras on public and private land to determine deer density in specific areas.
The deer permit areas (DPAs) included in the study are 169, 176, 177, 178, 197, and 679, and they’re located in Cass, Beltrami, Itasca, Hubbard, and St. Louis counties. This month, the DNR will reach out to private landowners to request access to their property to set up trail cameras.

Feds and White Earth Nation sign agreement on Minnesota’s Tamarac refuge

An agreement signed June 4 by officials from White Earth Nation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service addresses issues from water levels on the water bodies of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge to uses – from wild ricing to hunting and fishing – of the 42,500-acre refuge by White Earth band members.
Notably, it includes no discussion of land transfer.
“We’ve been working with the tribe on conservation on the refuge for a long, long time,” said Kent Sundseth, Tamarac refuge manager for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “This formalizes our existing relationship.”

Wisconsin Wardens at Work: Violators caught on their own trail cameras

Hans Walleser, a Wisconsin DNR field warden, is right where he wants to be – close to family and friends, close to his hometown, and where there are great varieties of resources to protect. Walleser grew up in Harper’s Ferry, Iowa, and was schooled at Kee High School in Lansing, Iowa, and UW-Stevens Point for his bachelors of science degree.
During the 2023 gun deer season, Walleser received a call regarding trail cameras and treestands left over night on the Rush Creek State Natural Area.

Steve Piatt: Old age adds to the appreciation felt for the turkey woods

Spring gobbler season is, quite literally, a painful reminder that I’m now the same age as old people.
Yet I still hunt, and my pre-season scouting runs essentially turn May Madness into a two-month or longer effort, rising each morning without benefit or need of an alarm clock, the passion still firmly intact even if the body is not. In the sports jargon of today, I would be described daily as a “game time decision,” dealing with a “lower body injury” that will at some point be addressed, but not until after the season.
