Choosing the right choke for your shotgun

In the simplest terms, choke controls the spread of shot out of your gun, more or less the way an adjustable nozzle controls the spray of water in a garden hose. That spray can be wide open or very small.
The right choke makes it easier to hit a target. It provides a broad enough pattern to hit with, while also ensuring you put enough pellets on target for a solid break or clean kill. Taking time to pick the choke for the wingshooting chore at hand is well worth the effort.

Shooting sports athletes coming to Cedar Falls June 3-9 for Iowa’s largest trap shoot

Nearly 3,100 Iowa shooting sports athletes from grade school through high school will shoot 780,000 targets during the 2024 Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Trap Championships, which will take place June 3-9 in Cedar Falls.
The Scholastic Clay Target Program has seen consistent growth in Iowa and across the nation, with increases in participation seen in Iowa middle school and high school teams, which have grown from 1,400 athletes to over 4,500 athletes since 2011. The state shoot in Cedar Falls has added an extra day this year to accommodate the growth.

Christine Thomas: Life and death mallard drama in Plover, Wis.

Life is all about energy and reproduction. Organisms need to take in enough energy to grow, sustain their biological functions, and to successfully produce offspring. Activities that require higher levels of energy than can be replenished do not make biological sense. Too many choices like that will lead to the demise of the organism.

A state sharp-tailed grouse plan: Will it happen in Minnesota?

Minnesota’s sharp-tailed grouse population has been declining, prompting the Minnesota DNR to close the hunting season in the east-central region in 2021, while maintaining a season in the northwest area.
The 2023 sharp-tailed grouse survey indicated a decrease in the mean, 95% confidence interval, and number of leks statewide, with similar trends in both the northwest and east-central regions of the state. There was, however, a notable increase in the number of leks in the east-central region.

Dan Ladd: I’m sold on the .410 for turkeys

A mere month before this year’s spring gobbler season began I had no intentions of mixing things up in terms of turkey hunting shotguns. A Remington 870 Express Mag 12-gauge with a thumbhole stock has been my go-to gobbler-getter for over a decade, with an Ithaca Mag 10 (10-gauge) as a back-up.
Then, in late March, I was fortunate to win a Winchester .22 at a sportsman’s banquet. Not needing another rimfire in my gun safe, and having just prepped Jerrod Vila’s appeal for the .410 (The Little Gun that Could) for the April 7 issue of this publication, I had an epiphany of adding a .410 turkey gun to my collection.

Gretchen Steele: The transition from spring to summer in southern Illinois is a beautiful thing

As we bid farewell to May, we also bid adieu to spring and welcome the vibrant summer in southern Illinois. This transition, unique to our region, is a spectacle to behold. Mother Nature, in her unpredictable ways, has treated us to a spring filled with unusual phenomena and moments, reminding us that she sets the pace, not our calendars.
