Bill Hilts, Jr.: New York’s Niagara River surprises lead to a huge walleye, media memories

For more than 25 years, some of the top outdoor media mavens in the country have converged in the village of Lewiston, N.Y., a cast away from the lower Niagara River.

It is a base of operations for all things fishing in western New York — Lake Erie/Upper Niagara River bass and walleye; trout, bass, and walleye in the Lower Niagara River; Lake Ontario salmon and trout. Even when the weather throws the group a curve ball, they can still manage to find some place to get on the water and catch fish. There is always a back-up plan.

Meet Ed Crosby: Ohio Outdoor News’ 2024 Person of the Year

Ed Crosby spends most of his time behind the scenes making sure all of Ohio’s hunter education instructors have what he or she needs to do their job.
He doesn’t seek out the limelight, but instead toils in relative obscurity. Now, however, Ohio Outdoor News is recognizing a job well done on behalf of Crosby by naming him this year’s Person of the Year.
“I’ve never done it for the recognition, but for the betterment of the whole area,” he said of receiving the award.

Bass tournaments on New York’s Lake Champlain prove to be big economic boost to region

The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), in coordination with the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) in New York, has released the results of the 2023 Lake Champlain Region bass tournament survey, developed to assess the economic impact of the region’s fishing tournaments.
The survey reports that visitors contributed positively to the local economy, with an estimated total spent in Essex County amounting to more than $2 million.

The walk-off tom: Be in position and ready should he return

Hunt turkeys enough, and you start to see some patterns develop, especially in the case of eager gobblers. Each year in the woods, I do my best to think like a gobbler. I fly down from the roost, gobble to gather, and keep walking and gobbling my way to a usual strut zone until I can get some hens to join along.
With that in mind, it’s helpful to consider that on the hunter’s end of the equation, you, a stationary hunter, may just be too slow or otherwise too immobile to interest a bird with a purpose. But there’s a technique for killing birds that keep creating greater distance.

Sportsman profile: Dan Kimmel is Michigan’s bass fishing ambassador

Bass fishing – especially tournament bass fishing – is extremely popular in Michigan. Driven in large part by its tremendous smallmouth bass fishery (especially in the Great Lakes and connected waters) nearly 65,000 anglers participated in 2,700 bass fishing tournaments in 2023.
While these numbers highlight the growing popularity of bass fishing, they also shine a light on the importance of protecting this valuable fishery. Despite the seemingly endless opportunities to catch trophy bass in Michigan, bass (and the anglers who target them), need an advocate. Fortunately, former bass tournament pro Dan Kimmel has been happy to fill the role.

Ben Moyer: Notice of Stocking is a positive start for Pennsylvania fisheries

Progress in natural resource conservation is always welcome news.
Same thing for managing outdoor recreation, which is why it’s good to know the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s Notice of Stocking regulation is in operation and, apparently, well received by many anglers and commercial fish producers. Establishing the rule, by which individuals or organizations intending to stock fish of any kind in the state are required to notify the Fish & Boat Commission was not easy.

New York’s Venison for Vets program expands as hunters help feed those in need

A program called Venison for Veterans that began in Montgomery County, N.Y., 16 years ago continues to broaden.
It started with a simple chat between Assemblyman George Amedore (who was at the time running) and Tom Georgia of Tribes Hill at an Amsterdam Mohawks baseball game.
“I always had a dream of taking care of our less fortunate seniors and veterans, not in the form of money, but hearty protein of real value,” Georgia said. “I pitched the idea to George and he told me if he was elected he would make it happen. Long story short, he was, and the idea came to life and grew and grew.”
