Sea lamprey supplemental controls deployed in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula rivers

Help is on the way to control spawning lamprey populations in the Pigeon, Sturgeon, and Maple rivers in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.
Nick Johnson, has been the coordinator of the Supplemental Sea Lamprey Control Initiative since 2019 and a member of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission Sea Lamprey Trapping Force since 2012. He’s studied fisheries with a focus on invasive control and native restoration in the Great Lakes. Thus, the most recent plan for sea lamprey controls deployment in the Pigeon, Sturgeon, and Maple has been well planned.

Popularity of bass fishing tournaments grows in Michigan

Tournament bass fishing in Michigan is growing every year, according to Tom Goniea, the fisheries biologist who monitors the sport for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
“The program started in 2016 and it’s increased every year with the exception of 2020, and it would have increased in 2020 as well if many of the tournaments weren’t wiped out because of COVID,” Goniea said. “It’s been on a steady upward trajectory.”

Star Watch: Famous astronomers (and an eclipse recap)

Aristotle (384-322 BC) and other early Greek astronomers thought that the Earth was stationary and at the center of the universe with the Sun and other planets rotating around it. Historians tell us that this so-called “geocentric” or earth-centered view of the universe was accepted as fact for over 1,500 years!

High quality habitat harboring rare plants and protecting both sides of the Little Beaver Creek State and National Wild and Scenic River has been designated as Ohio’s newest state nature preserve, according to the Ohio DNR.
“It remains important to preserve Ohio’s many wonderful natural resources for citizens of today and of the future,” said Gov. Mike DeWine. “Dedicating Little Beaver Creek as a State Nature Preserve will protect one of Ohio’s scenic rivers as well as critical habitat for rare plant species.”
