Commentary: Wildlife funding diversions and why we should be paying attention

As is the case for many Americans, Joe Arterburn’s money doesn’t go as far as it used to. On the one hand, it’s being whittled away by inflation. On the other hand, Arterburn is spending a disproportionate share of it on his Nebraska state property taxes, which are going up as property values rise.
His governor has proposed some relief. Gov. Jim Pillen’s “Operation Clean Out the Closets” initiative, which he announced in his state-of-the-state address in January 2024, proposes to sweep cash “hoarded” by state agencies into Nebraska’s general fund, where it could be used as a one-time windfall to reduce property taxes.

House File 1900, authored by Rep. Athena Hollins, DFL-St. Paul, advanced the process of renewing the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund. The bill allowed for a constitutional amendment in the 2024 general election that would extend the dedication of lottery proceeds to the ENRTF.

Minnesota’s walleye egg take on time, on target in 2024

Matt Ward knows the DNR’s Hinckley area fisheries office isn’t exactly running with the big dogs when it comes to walleye egg collection in April. “We’re not like the Cut Foot Sioux, collecting 200 quarts of eggs in a day,” he said of the operation near Lake Winnibigoshish.
But when it comes to stocking Minnesotans’ favorite fish, each location that collects eggs from female walleyes and milt from the males plays a role – especially in an era when “strain” often determines where tiny fish eventually will call home.
