Presque Isle Bay perch barely misses Pennsylvania record

A Lawrence County man appears to have tied the Pennsylvania yellow perch record, but won’t get to share the glory – not officially, anyway.
Chuck Main, of Ellwood City, boated a 3.02-pound perch on Presque Isle Bay April 7, which was on par with the 2.98 pound record-setter Kirk Rudzinski, of Erie, caught on a shiner from Lake Erie in 2021.

Trout permit sales were slightly down when the season got off to a cold, soggy start in early April.
Although the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission sold 2.74% more annual licenses than by opening day weekend last year, it sold 0.55% fewer trout stamps. As of April 7, 324,038 licenses and 294,598 trout permits were issued compared with 315,398 licenses and 296,206 permits as of April 2, 2023.

A common complaint from readers of this publication and others is that families with more than one young hunter often can’t take advantage of the mentored youth hunting program.
Now the Pennsylvania Game Commission has taken a step toward resolving that problem.

Jerry Bush: Being a hunting mentor to a child is a great honor, but it carries great responsibilities

In 1967, at the age of 12, I benefited from a rite of passage when my father purchased my first Pennsylvania hunting license. Dad taught me how to hunt and a few things that helped hone my shooting skills.
I’ll always remember my first firearm, which was a break-action, 16 gauge, that had to serve me for hunting big and small game.

There’s plenty of ways to mess up on a spring gobbler; here’s what not to do

There are a lot of ways not to kill a turkey and I have discovered most of them. On the other hand, after more than 60 years of spring turkey hunting, I think I’ve become aware of the things not to do if you want to bring home a bird.
Others may disagree but I think spring turkey hunting has changed since back in the early 1970s.
