Steve Piatt: Canada’s Algonquin Provincial Park a special wilderness experience that keeps calling

On the wall at the bottom of the stairs of our home, we walk past the big map several times daily. Sometimes I stop and look closely, knowing where we’ve been and wondering, too, whether we’ll ever return.
Canada’s Algonquin Provincial Park has, over the years, been one of our special places, a maze of canoe routes and trails where we’ve paddled, portaged, camped, hiked, snowshoed, fished, and enjoyed encounters with moose, wolves, otters, loons, and black bears.

Illinois hunters renewing FOID cards should not face delays in 2024

Hunters and shooters in the state needing to renew Firearm Owners Identification cards before the fall hunting seasons should not run into delays or problems, the Illinois State Police said.
ISP Director Brendan Kelly told The Center Square this month that backlogs are nearly non-existent.

Dan Ladd: The many rewards of being a hunting mentor

One of my favorite photos, and one that I’ve gotten a lot of mileage from in terms of it being published, is a shot I staged and took exactly 20 years ago this spring. It was the first morning of New York’s inaugural youth turkey hunt in 2004 and simply shows myself and my then 12-year-old nephew, Larry, walking in a field.

Patrick Durkin: Rebounding beavers gnaw, build Wisconsin’s wetlands

The first Wisconsin game warden killed by gunfire didn’t die protecting deer, bears, wolves, walleyes or waterfowl.
No, Einar P. Johnson, 33, died in May 1929 after confronting two Minnesotans who were bootlegging beaver pelts near Ladysmith. Wisconsin closed its beaver season that year to protect the depleted species after pelt prices hit $45 ($792 today, when adjusted for inflation), causing widespread overharvests. At that price in that era, one prime beaver pelt was worth more than many families’ monthly incomes.

Outdoor Insights: A bill that makes sense from Minnesota regarding sales or transfer of state lands

Sen. Steve Green, R-Fosston, introduced Senate File 5393 last week, which in simple terms would require supermajority approval for certain sales or transfers of surplus state lands. It would require a three-fifths majority vote in each house of the Legislature to transfer properties that don’t comply with the definitions of tax-forfeited properties.

An ‘unintentional success:’ Celebrating the life of Gary McCree, known as the “Goosemaster” in southern Illinois

The world of waterfowl hunting, and especially goose hunting, recently lost a true legend. I’m coming to terms with the fact that as I get older, my longtime friends, mentors, colleagues, and hunting partners are aging as well.
Unfortunately, with that aging process comes loss.
The loss this time has the entire southern Illinois waterfowl community mourning one of its own. Gary McCree, long known as the “Goosemaster,” has gone to fly with his beloved geese.

Aquatic invasive species control a focal point for DNR heading into Minnesota’s open-water fishing season

With the Minnesota fishing opener less than a month away, control of the spread of aquatic invasive species is a top priority for the Minnesota DNR. The DNR has long made AIS a central focus, with changes to state laws and efforts to educate anglers and other water recreation enthusiasts.
According to Adam Doll, DNR invasive species prevention consultant, the DNR’s Invasive Species Program traces its origins to the mid-1980s. Since then, it has evolved and changed.
