Commentary: Winter was tough on the southern Illinois bald eagle population

Homeowners are well aware that the rigors of winter exact a toll on your home. Spring touch-up work is inevitable – a dab of paint here, perhaps a few shingles need to be replaced, perhaps a torn window screen needs repair. It’s part of life. You expect it.
The same is true in nature. And, the past winter was particularly devastating for several predator nests in southern Illinois.

Spring fires: Some are ‘prescribed,’ others are not across New York

Across New York fire can be a tool for creating habitat and battling invasive species during the spring. This is done in the form of prescribed fires often performed by Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers, Fish and Wildlife staff and volunteers.

Other times, human error leads to unintentional wild fires and is thus the reason for New York’s annual brush burning ban. What follows are reports from DEC on recent activity in relation to wild fires and prescribed burns in New York.

Christine Thomas: University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point celebrates 50 years of black bear research

On April 2, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point College of Natural Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Foundation invited faculty, staff, volunteers, and donors to a celebration to commemorate the completion of a $1 million endowment to support the future of a Wisconsin black bear research project that has been underway in the greater Clam Lake area for approximately five decades.
They asked me to provide a little bit of history on the project. So many old friends showed up in an April blizzard. This was a very emotional day for me. The following represent my remarks.

Gene Kroupa: Jakes on the last day are sometimes too tempting to ignore

Some turkey hunters have an aversion to shooting jakes – those yearling birds that sport stubby beards, but also boast tender roasting breasts.
I don’t suffer from that type of sickness, especially if it’s nearing Day Seven of the season and I still have an unfilled tag. However, pulling down on a jake has kept me from tagging a hard-hunted gobbler instead.

What to know about moose and elk lotteries coming up in Kentucky, the northeast

Chances are you know one of those lucky hunters who have drawn a coveted moose or elk hunting tag in those out-of-state locales where the majestic animals roam and in numbers that prompt wildlife agencies to offer limited hunting opportunities.

Maybe you’re even one of those hunters. It happens every year to scores of sportsmen and women who apply for moose or elk permits in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.
Here’s how, and when, to enter this year’s lottery drawings for one of those coveted tags.

Mississippi hunter harvests rare red and black phase gobbler

Mississippi is home to the Eastern wild turkey. But colors of the bird can vary, as a hunter in the southern state found out.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” said Todd Peltier of Ocean Springs, Miss.
Peltier was hunting in Simpson County on March 16. There was an unusual gobbler in the area, but he had never seen it and certainly didn’t expect to encounter it while hunting.
