Pennsylvania Game Commission leader gets questions about secondary business

A state legislator recently questioned the head of the Pennsylvania Game Commission on whether he is operating a side business on state time.
During a March 20 hearing before the House Game and Fisheries Committee, state Rep. David Maloney, R-Berks, asked Game Commission Executive Director Bryan Burhans about his business, Bryan Burhans LLC. Maloney, who is the Republican chair of the committee, held up a printout of a business website, and Burhans acknowledged he has an LLC.

Ohio’s gobbler forecast paints a picture much like 2023

A popular spring tradition since 1966, Ohio’s wild turkey hunting seasons begin in April. This spring, hunters will benefit from two years of above average turkey hatches, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
“Hunters can expect a spring season very similar to 2023,” Mark Wiley, the division’s lead turkey biologist, told Ohio Outdoor News in late March. “That’s all based on the poult data we’ve gathered. Remember, we want to look at the poult data from two years ago.”

Wolf kills a calf in Colorado, the first confirmed kill after the predator’s reintroduction

A wolf has killed a calf in Colorado, wildlife officials said Wednesday, confirming the first livestock kill after 10 of the predators were controversially reintroduced in December to the aggrievement of the state’s rural residents.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed after an investigation that the wounds of the calf killed Tuesday, and nearby wolf tracks, were consistent with a wolf kill, what they refer to as a “depredation.”

January antlerless deer season likely coming in certain CWD units in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Game Commission board is expected to vote on a proposal to extend the firearms antlerless deer season through January in certain wildlife management units impacted by chronic wasting disease.
The idea was discussed at length during the board’s Jan. 26 meeting when it heard staff reports. At that time, Game Commission Deer and Elk Section Supervisor David Stainbrook said population trends in units where CWD is present are stable, and the harvest needs to increase.

Soup giant Campbell’s sued over Lake Erie pollution plague

The U.S. Department of Justice and environmental groups filed two lawsuits against Campbell accusing the soup giant of polluting Lake Erie.
Both lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Ohio hours apart alleging similar complaints that Campbell’s manufacturing plant in Napoleon, Ohio, has allowed wastewater and pollutants to flow unchecked into the Maumee River, which flows into Lake Erie, for years, CBS News reported.
