Minnesota state and tribal leaders gathered last Friday, March 15, to complete the transfer of Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux (Dakota) Community.
Legislators voted to transfer the 1,300 acres of state-owned property located southeast of Granite Falls – and Gov. Tim Walz signed the legislation – a year ago.
The DNR closed the park to the public on Feb. 16, and the ceremony last week made the transfer to the band official, according to the DNR.

“This land transfer is an important moment in our state’s history. Given its significance to Dakota people and the tragic events that took place there, it was inappropriate to continue to operate a park at that site,” DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen said in a DNR news release.
She said the DNR will continue to explore new (replacement) recreational opportunities for all residents in the Minnesota River Valley. Pictured, holding the signed agreement last Friday, are Upper Sioux Community Chairman Kevin Jensvold and Strommen. Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan also were on hand for the ceremony.
