Legislative auditor to investigate after allegations Minnesota DNR misused funds for WMA timber harvest

The Office of the Legislative Auditor, or OLA, has announced it will undertake what’s known as a “special review” to examine the Minnesota DNR’s alleged misuse of federal grant funds designed to benefit wildlife and their habitat.
The OLA informed DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen of the review in a March 1 letter that noted that the legislative auditor recently completed a preliminary assessment of the allegations.

Is carp deterrent coming to Minnesota waters of the Mississippi? More funding might just be available

The 2024 Minnesota legislative session is about a month old and, so far, there’s been no hearings or discussions regarding a bill relating to a carp deterrent at Lock and Dam 5 on the Mississippi River, even though it was a hot topic leading into the session.
But later this month, there’s a potential way to get the design and construction of the deterrent funded this session.

Black vultures remain a problem as Illinois Farm Bureau seeks special DNR, USFWS permits

Personal accounts of Illinois hunters coming face-to-face with black vultures have been surprisingly rare – but not that it would matter.
As migratory birds, black vultures are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
“They can’t be killed or destroyed without a migratory bird depredation permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a nuisance wildlife control permit from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources,” is how the state’s hunting regulations put it.

Curriculum in New York would get kids outside to interact with trout stream ecosystems

While paying attention to the way his kids learn, Jordan Ross noticed something that started his gears turning. They lacked enthusiasm for learning about the outdoors, watersheds, and conservation through the traditional avenues. The way these subjects were taught in the classroom didn’t excite or engage them.
“From observing them, the inquisitive side of learning, and curiosity element wasn’t there,” Ross said.
That wasn’t the case when he took them to a local stream with a kick net to turn up rocks and investigate what was crawling underneath.

Wisconsin panfish angler in Oneida County catches a break

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) field wardens may have a good idea who a likely suspect may be simply by the body language they telegraph across the ice, even from a quarter-mile away.
Warden Audrey Royce knew she wanted to work in law enforcement, protecting natural resources. When she first visited an area of Oneida County, she knew it was the place she would like to be stationed.
