Two state forests among proposed land transfers to tribes in Minnesota

Legislation offered earlier this week by seven Minnesota House DFLers seeks to transfer state forest and other DNR-administered land surrounding Upper Red Lake to Red Lake Nation, the potential implications of which on area landowners, affected counties, and even state-licensed anglers were still unknown at Outdoor News press time.
Among the bill authors was Rep. Sydney Jordan, DFL-Minneapolis and vice chair of the House Environment and Natural Resources Finance and Policy Committee, to which the bill, HF 4780, was referred. Rep. Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul, chairs that committee.

No major changes proposed for Michigan elk hunting season

Michigan’s elk season lengths and quotas would go unchanged for the next two years under a proposal being considered by the state Natural Resources Commission.
Commissioners are vetting a proposal from the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division to maintain regulations adopted in 2022 for the two year regulation cycle that includes 2024 and 2025, with action possible in April.

Commentary: Increasing Michigan’s Upper Peninsula bear licenses would benefit the deer herd

Increasing the Upper Peninsula bear harvest by issuing more bear licenses will increase recruitment of fawns, thereby increasing the white-tailed deer population.
Black bears are major predators on fawns. Retired DNR deer researcher John Ozoga confirmed that single yearling black bears reduced fawn survival by 22% during each year over three years that one bear gained access to the one square mile enclosure at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station in Shingleton.

Pennsylvania is known for having some of the best turkey callers and turkey hunters in the country.
So it’s perhaps not surprising that the Keystone State is also home to some of the best call makers in the U.S. as well. That reputation is solidified every year at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s annual Convention & Sport Show, which includes call making competition that attracts the best of the best.

Outdoor Observations: Michigan biologists have done a fine job of managing the state’s turkey population

Turkey populations seem to be declining in many states to the south, but not so much in Michigan.
Michigan DNR Turkey Specialist Adam Bump said the state’s turkey population appears to be stable. That’s mostly based on harvest numbers and hunter numbers, which the agency tallies each year.
