Trains derail, collide in Pennsylvania as Lehigh River largely spared

As of last last week, Norfolk Southern crews and contractors were working on cleanup and track repair near Bethlehem, Pa., after a collision and derailment in early March involving three trains that left some railroad cars scattered along a riverbank and at least one partially in the river.

New York DEC discusses forthcoming Adirondack Brook Trout Management Plan at public meetings

Two years ago, in early 2022, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s fisheries team was in the process of rewriting several freshwater fishing regulations.
At that time brook trout management was set aside with the idea that eventually the state’s official freshwater fish would have its own management plan. That time has come.

Cooperative trout nurseries in Pennsylvania getting extra attention

The Fish & Boat Commission is reaffirming the importance of Pennsylvania’s cooperative trout nursery program.
Twenty-five cooperative trout nursery managers and volunteers gathered at the Moshannon Community Center Feb. 24 in a luncheon meeting sponsored by the agency. The session was held to teach better ways for the co-ops to manage their trout, as well as how to fill out the Fish & Boat Commission’s new “Notice of Stocking” form.

Senators seem to be good with Pennsylvania Game Commission’s plans to spend reserves

Six months after the Pennsylvania Game Commission avoided a plan by the state Senate to transfer $150 million from a $500 million reserve the agency was sitting on, Executive Director Bryan Burhans unveiled a plan to spend some of the money.

Commentary: Some Pennsylvania streams should not be stocked with trout

This photo, borrowed from the Little Beaver Historical Society, was taken at the North Fork Little Beaver Creek in Beaver County, Pa. My father told me many stories about the great panfish and bass fishing on the creek until trout were stocked.
The Little Beaver is a slow-moving creek that the trout can neither reproduce nor survive in the warm summer months. If you put any other creatures in this creek fitting that description, they would be considered an invasive species.

Hunting a whitetails’ security cover: Here are keys to consistent success

Growing up deer hunting during the shotgun season in southern Minnesota, I learned there was a general mindset about hunting deer-bedding areas: Just don’t do it. You’ll chase deer from a property.
Honestly, doing so never felt necessary. The heightened hunting pressure was enough to get deer moving along river bottoms and through small woodlots. Thus, that mindset was hard to abandon, even after jumping into bowhunting after college in 2007. It was during a mid-October hunt a few years later that I became frustrated enough to change.
