Kansas crappie removed from state records after steel ball bearings are found in its stomach

A man from Kansas who was declared as a new state-record holder for a crappie he caught last year has had that fish removed from the records after weights were discovered in the fish.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) verified a 4.07-pound white crappie caught by Bobby Parkhurst as the new state record on April 4, 2023.

Ralph Loos: Report shines light on top complaints of Illinois deer hunters

The only way a deer hunter in Illinois could get more attention than he or she already gets is if Taylor Swift showed up in a neighboring tree to gleefully watch him or her hunt.
Don’t think it could never happen. “Spotlight on the stage” deer hunting has been a thing for many years, starting back in the 1990s when national hunting magazines and evolving TV hunting shows began highlighting our Pike County and its impressive collection of resident monster bucks.

Joe Albert: There’s fishing… and then there’s fishing in Alaska

Aside from seeing “The Goonies” when it was still in theaters in Anchorage, I have pretty much no recollection of my family’s first trip to Alaska in 1985. But my dad caught a big king salmon, which he had mounted, and as the years went on and my love of fishing deepened, it stood as a constant reminder of what was possible in that faraway land.

In Ilion, New York, residents prepare for life without Remington factory that has been fabric of the town

Remington began here two centuries ago and generations of workers have turned out rifles and shotguns at the massive firearms factory in the middle of this blue-collar village in the heart of New York’s Mohawk Valley.
Now residents of Ilion are bracing for Remington’s exit, ending an era that began when Eliphalet Remington forged his first rifle barrel nearby in 1816.

Christine Thomas: It’s been a weird winter at the little cabin

It was another balmy winter day in central Wisconsin. After lunch, I loaded up my Airedale, Major, in the Jeep and headed out to enjoy some sunshine at the little cabin.
My plan was to start a fire in the woodstove to get the cabin warmed up a bit. There are some rotting log issues, and a contractor was coming to look at the project the next day. More on that in a future column.
