Tiny window for winter walleyes barely counts as “ice fishing season” on Ohio’s Lake Erie

After more than a week of arctic temperatures blanketed the region in mid-January, portions of Lake Erie quickly got cold enough to freeze, which provided a few days for ice anglers to dust off their hard-water gear and head out.
The first two ice shanties were planted near the “old ramp” off South Bass Island’s west shore on Wednesday, Jan. 17.

New York’s Ulster County sportsmen building program to donate wild game meat to those in need

The Federated Sportsmen’s Clubs of Ulster County are continuing their efforts to help those in need through expansion of a venison/game donation program.
A recent meeting involving the board of directors of FSCUC, state Environmental Conservation Officers Adam Johnson and William Chomicki, and Wallkill Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry Director Jim Hinson included a tour of the pantry and a discussion on donations of venison and other harvested game.

As other seasons close, Iowa hunters turn attention to coyotes

Coyote hunting moves to center stage for an estimated 10,000 hunters, after most of Iowa’s other hunting seasons have now closed.
Although its season never closes, coyotes, the state’s top predator, are hunted most often during the winter. The coyote population is distributed fairly well across the state with the highest numbers in western Iowa. Coyotes are habitat generalists and can be found near large brush piles, timber and grass fields, and in particular, fields with switchgrass.

Steve Sarley: Youth attendance at sports shows is vital

It’s a pretty good time of year for me. Mixing in a little ice fishing with all the outdoors shows that are happening is what I consider to be a good time. That is, even though the ice fishing season appears to be only a couple weeks long this year, although I’m sure the ice will return.
I love attending the shows, but this winter I am enjoying the shows for different reasons than usual.
