Anglers enjoy the peace of Portage, and its many fish in Minnesota’s Cass County

Located just off Highway 2 near Bena, Portage Lake tends to get lost in the shadows of two of the state’s most notable Cass County fisheries, Winnibigoshish and Leech.
Portage is a 1,538-acre lake with mostly undeveloped shorelines, so it tends to offer a tranquil fishing experience. And further, its walleyes are plentiful. Portage is a hidden little gem, that’s tucked away in the heart of Chippewa National Forest.

During the Jan. 27 quarterly meeting, the board approved a motion to table the plan after several commissioners said they needed more time to gauge hunter sentiment and collect more information.
The marten plan was drafted in 2022 and since then the board has voted to table moving forward with the measure on two occasions.

A move is under way that animal-rights advocates hope will persuade the state to end plans to overturn a nearly 40-year-old hunting ban on black bears in Louisiana.
Jeff Dorson, executive director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, started an online petition in late December after the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries began a process that could let hunters kill up to 10 bears this year.
