Wayne LaPierre, one of the most powerful figures in U.S. gun policy, leaves NRA days before trial

The longtime head of the National Rifle Association announced on Friday, Jan. 5, his resignation, just days before the start of a civil trial over allegations he treated himself to millions of dollars in private jet flights, yacht trips, African safaris and other extravagant perks at the powerful gun rights organization’s expense.

New York DEC advises birdwatchers to feed wild birds responsibly

For many birdwatchers in New York, winter is an exciting time of year – when backyard bird feeders can go back up!
There are many natural sources of winter food for birds including birch catkins, spruce and fir cones, dried seed heads from native grasses and flowers, and lingering fruits on plants. Bird feeders, meanwhile, can supplement these natural foods and may attract more birds to your yard.

Dan Ladd: Is coyote contest ban just the start for anti-hunters in New York?

Reading Gov. Kathy Hochul’s press release announcing her signing legislation that bans coyote hunting contests, among others, it’s included supporters/commenters reads like a “who’s who” list of anti-hunters.
Of course, no one from the hunting community was included, or likely even consulted on this decision, even though Gary Muthig, of the Federation of Sportsmen Clubs of Sullivan County, told me he’d been trying for months to get Hochul’s attention before the bill even came to her desk.

Heading west to hunt mule deer? Following these steps can help fill tags

Few things are as much fun as an out-of-state hunting trip. Not only will there be a strong sense of adventure, but there will be months of increasing anticipation.
In many cases you will learn something new on your hunt that you may be able to apply back home or on future hunts. For many of us, this trip will be to the Great Plains of the western states to pursue mule deer.

Commentary: Bird, animal names fraught with historical and ‘cutesy’ perils

Let’s hope the American Society of Mammalogists is tracking efforts by the American Ornithological Society to rename all birds that honor people, and shouting, “Buck pellets!”
If you missed it in November, those zany ornithologists announced that naming birds after famous people can be harmful enough to decrease “the focus, appreciation, or consideration of the birds themselves.” But rather than evaluate each bird based on its namesake’s sins or merits, the organization plans to dump all namesakes.
