Species Spotlight: Do you know about hooded mergansers, the duck of many names?

If there wasn’t a photo with this story would you be able to identify the duck if I were to only describe it by some of its common or regionally associated names: fish duck, sawbill, spikebill, sharpy, fuzzhead, frog duck, and a host of others? Illinois DNR recognizes efforts to reclaim mined property as habitat benefit

Illinois DNR has announced recipients of the 2023 Land Reclamation Awards, presented by the Office of Mines and Minerals, Land Reclamation and Explosive and Aggregate divisions.
The honor acknowledges projects that turn mined land into favorable habitat for wildlife and fish across the state.

Illinois conservation leader, John Rogner, retires after 40 years of serving wildlife, fish

After 40 years working in conservation – including stints with DNR, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service – DNR Assistant director John Rogner retired at the end of 2023.
Rogner’s career started as a Youth Conservation Corps crew leader at Mississippi Palisades State Park while he was in graduate school at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where he earned both bachelors and masters of sciences degrees.

Illinois Mixed Bag: Carlyle, Shelbyville accepting Christmas trees to improve fish habitat

Lake Shelbyville officials are collecting old trees in Sullivan and Shelbyville to reuse to improve the lake’s fisheries next year.
Trees for Lake Shelbyville will be collected in Sullivan 66 Gas Station in Sullivan and the Johnstone Mall in Shelbyville.
