Here’s how to catch Illinois’ saugeyes in the fall

A seasonal mystery it is, saugeyes in the fall. Finding them can be as bad or worse than summer saugeyes, a most difficult feat for me. Perseverance to stay with it can be tough; it can take all day. Other species hitting the line with ease make for a tempting distraction.
I am learning the quirks needed for success in the fall, some obvious, some not so much. The learning never ends, probably why it is so much fun.

The effort was an important step before the fish are stocked into the Illinois River and its tributaries in the state.

Commentary: National Shooting Sports Foundation says USFWS ‘final rule’ on refuge lead use unacceptable

NSSF, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, rejects the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service “final rule” (announced Oct. 27) that bans the use of traditional lead ammunition on eight national wildlife refuges and fishing tackle on seven NWRs in exchange for opening hunting and fishing opportunities on public lands.

Illinois loses biologist who had big impact, bigger laugh in Bob Bluett

Three decades ago, before DNR was gathered and grouped in a glass headquarters on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, biologists and other staff worked in random offices scattered around Springfield.
Let’s say you were a newspaper reporter in the Capital City and you wanted to talk to someone about a squirrel problem. There as no Internet to speak of, so you needed a map and library card just to figure out who was doing what, and where.
