Western Pennsylvania friends go on 2-year wild-trout quest

When his buddy Mike Munson took up Tenkara fly-fishing in wild-trout streams around his hometown of Jones Mills in Westmoreland County last winter, TJ Platt looked on with interest.
Tenkara is a method of fly- fishing that originated in the mountains of Japan and has now developed into a modern pastime. It uses quite long rods, fixed lengths of casting line attached to the rod-tip and simple, impressionistic wet fly patterns.

Shooters, save what’s left of your hearing: Here’s are some steps to take

“Say what?”

If you’ve spent much time at a skeet or trap club, you’ve probably noticed that some older club members speak in a loud voice and ask you to repeat what you just said. Perhaps multiple times.
In most people, hearing loss is a function of at least two factors: aging and exposure to loud noises. In addition to getting on in years, those older gents most likely started shooting long before anyone paid much attention to hearing protection. They may be wearing some form of protection now, but the damage was done long ago.

Illinois Outdoor News columnist Gretchen Steele reflects on receiving outdoor hall of fame honor

When Coulterville’s Gretchen Steele ventured into the field of outdoor writing in the early 2000s, she felt a bit out of her element.
Not just a fish out of water, but “a carp in a bird bath,” as she eloquently stated.
“I didn’t go to journalism school,” Steele said. “It’s not something I set out as a career path. I didn’t have the same educational background. I always just felt like I was some batty old lady that ran around the woods and did strange stuff.”
Well, Steele can make more room in that bird bath now. She was recently named as part of the 2023 induction class of the Illinois Outdoors Hall of Fame.

Minnesota’s Somerset Wildlife Management Area gets an addition

The Somerset Wildlife Management Area is one of many WMAs near the city of Owatonna. Somerset has seen steady growth and additions to the WMA, allowing for more habitat and wildlife over the years.
On Friday, Oct. 13, a celebration took place during the Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener to add 40 acres to Somerset WMA. The parcel now has a total of about 440 acres for hunting, hiking, bird watching, and other outdoor activity.

The changing face of deer hunting: Is it a good thing?

I’m not sure what happened to deer hunting and I’m also not sure I like it. I’m an old deer hunter right now, but I started deer hunting when I was about 16 or 17 years old.
I was born and raised in the city of Newark (New Jersey), not exactly a frontier town. No one in my family were hunters, so I started out on my own through the world of outdoor magazines. If someone told me back then that I would ultimately end up as Editor-in-Chief of Outdoor Life, I would have said they were totally nuts.
