Jeff Bontekoe, with his wife Kelly handling the paper work and a few others doing the prepping, has processed many moose, elk, bear, caribou, and deer over the years.
Lots of deer. Bontekoe thinks he’s close to 10,000 deer carcasses in his 33 years as a butcher, so his advice is worth listening to when it comes to what a hunter should keep in mind after a successful hunt.

We’re going to back the truck up a little bit in this spot this week to a topic from the last issue – the UW-Stevens Point College of Natural Resources (CNR) black bear project that received a $1 million endowment that should carry the project into the future as far as we can see. There is a rich history surrounding this project that reaches way back to the days of Dr. Ray Anderson, who got the ball rolling more than 45 years ago.

At this point in the year, it is very easy to spend every waking moment in a treestand. Deer hunting can cause people to become singularly focused on antlers and not about the rest of life.
This also can cause hunters to make poor decisions in regard to their safety and sometimes, to those around them. Sometimes a little planning will help to limit those poor decisions, keep relationships strong, and aid you in having a good hunting season in and out of the woods.

The 2023 Camp Ripley archery hunt is in the books, and many officials from the Minnesota DNR, Central Lakes College, and Camp Ripley were happy with the results.
According to the DNR, 1,846 hunters participated in the archery hunt, Oct. 27-29. During the three-day hunt, 202 deer were harvested. It was an 11% success rate, which matches last year’s rate and is above the longterm average of 9% for the hunt.
“That consistent success just speaks to the overall consistency of the deer herd in central Minnesota,” said Jake Kitzmann, Camp Ripley’s natural resources manager.
