Nature Smart: A look at some of nature’s rule-breakers

In the natural world, I admire the rule-breakers – the species of plant or animal that just don’t fit into the pigeon holes that people dig for them. I like the species that go against the preconceived ideas that humans set forth. Recently, while working in my large perennial flower garden (which is in my front yard, not backyard), I found a large orchid plant. I know all the plants in my garden, so when I saw this orchid, it stopped me in my tracks because I hadn’t planted it.

Backyard and Beyond: A black bear tale

Sometimes a photo is just as captivating for what it doesn’t show as for what it does. Case in point: Scott Thiede is a very patient photographer, sitting in a blind out in a field for hours at a time to get unique views of the natural world.
His photo of a black bear doesn’t show the fact that Thiede had been in that same spot just a few minutes earlier.

13-year-old takes huge bull, shares special hunt with father during Minnesota elk season

The Minnesota Vikings may have lost on Sunday, Sept. 24, but 13-year-old Ryker Copp definitely won.
After watching the Vikings, Copp went out and shot an 8-by-10 elk during his once-in-a-lifetime hunt. More than a week later, he’s still shaking from the series of events. He’s most happy about sharing a once-in-a-lifetime memory with his father, Jerred Copp.
“I can’t even explain it, it was just really fun,” Ryker said. “I’m pretty excited because we can hang up (my elk) next to my dad’s (elk).”

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has chosen winners for the Minnesota turkey and pheasant stamp contests.
Shakopee artist Mark Thone won the Minnesota pheasant stamp contest with an acrylic painting of a pheasant. The winner was selected on Sept. 28 from seven eligible submissions. Second place was Stephen Hamrick of Lakeville; third place was Mike Zillgitt of Pine Island. The winning artwork will be featured on the 2024 pheasant stamp.
