Nature Smart: fast fox of the west

Standing in the open high plains of eastern Wyoming where there are few trees to stop the wind, I faced a constant breeze. The vast open area is perfect habitat for a special canid called the swift fox (Vulpes velox), North America’s smallest native member of the dog family. It is a tiny fox, weighing between 3 and 7 pounds.

Backyard and Beyond: The kestrel kids

Marguerite Eichelberger has been keeping an eye on a kestrel family on a friend’s property, enjoying the antics of the young falcons after fledging from their nest cavity. She was on hand to take photos as the young falcons caught and ate prey, such as June bugs, mice, and even a bat.

For duck-hunt addicts, the magical season is nigh

Riding shotgun the other day with a friend at the wheel, I found my reflection in the young man next to me. He was driving a large, red truck and was blowing a duck call simultaneously. He seemed to be trying to master the hail call, the notes of which start high and ride down the musical scale with an even tempo.
The first note is louder and more forceful – it demands a duck’s attention – and the successive notes are slightly sharper and faster. Unlike me at that age, he knew what he was doing. His calling was as spit-shined polished as that of a competition caller.

Upgrades to electric barrier continue to help protect Iowa’s Great Lakes from Asian carp

The electric fish barrier to keep Asian carp from entering the Iowa Great Lakes through the Lower Gar Lake outlet has been in place and operational for the past 11 years.
Over that time, it has done its job in keeping Asian carp from entering the Iowa Great Lakes as they make their way up the Little Sioux River during high water situations.
