West Okoboji is truly a world class largemouth and smallmouth fishery. That became apparent this past spring with the results of the Okoboji Open held in early May, where 21 teams weighed in five-fish weights of over 20 pounds, with the winning team topping the scale at 30.44 pounds. That’s averaging over six pounds per fish. Big fish? How about an 8.16-pound largemouth with another three bass over seven pounds.

Ohio’s Deerassic Classic gets geared up for 21st year in Cambridge

This year’s annual Deerassic Classic will kick off it’s 21st year during the event that runs Aug. 4-5 at Deerassic Park near Cambridge.
The annual outdoorsmen’s extravaganza typically draws about 20,000 people to southeast Ohio for two days of camaraderie and the chance to win valuable prizes.
“We’ve got everything that’s been working for us and are crowd favorites that are coming back,” says Mark Meeker, executive director of the National Whitetail Deer Education Foundation and Deerassic Park Education Center.

Crankbaits fit the bill in many fishing scenarios

As we slowly made our way along the shoreline of a local lake recently, the youth angler in my boat asked how deep the water was so he knew which crankbait to tie on. When I told him we were in 3 to 6 feet of water, he excitedly replied, “Oh, okay, so I need a square-billed crankbait then.”
