Two Iowa teachers earn Brass Bluegill awards for their role in introducing kids to fishing

A pair of teachers recently received Brass Bluegill awards in recognition of their efforts to give students a taste of Iowa’s natural resources.
Jason Ohrt and Shane Blake were recognized by Fish Iowa! during a presentation at the Natural Resources Commission meeting last week in Des Moines. Fish Iowa! is a program used in formal settings for Iowa educators and youth leaders to help them introduce students to fishing through a wide range of activities and lesson plans.

Lake Michigan study finds PFAS in every fish species sampled

When it comes to PFAS, scientists have found these “forever chemicals” in soil, water, and air in sites around the country and the world.
Now, researchers have found PFAS in every Lake Michigan fish they sampled and a particularly toxic form of PFAS in most of the lake’s sportfish. PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which encompass thousands of compounds that don’t break down in the environment. They are used in many everyday items like nonstick cookware, water- or stain-resistant clothing or carpeting, cosmetics, and even toilet paper.

Fishing Canada’s side of Lake of the Woods produces mixed bag of fish

Lake of the Woods (LOW) is incredibly large and sprawls over 1,485 square miles, which is 25 times bigger than Lake Winnebago – and much more complicated, with 14,000 rocky islands and 3,800 miles of shoreline which it shares with Minnesota.
The lake is home to a thriving fishery for smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, perch, and muskies. Deep areas like Clearwater Bay hold lake trout.

Joy of Life Foundation in Iowa helps those in need, demonstrates how serious melanoma can be

Melanoma struck home for John Walz, a longtime educator in the Spirit Lake schools in Iowa, when his wife Joy died of melanoma on Feb. 16, 2015 at the age of 48. Out of the grief over her loss, John and his children, Morgan, JP and Wesley, took it upon themselves to remember Joy and to help others fight melanoma through the Joy of Life Foundation.
The Joy of Life Foundation was founded in 2017 with the goal of giving back and showing the same benevolence and goodwill to those who are seeking help or are experiencing a time of need. A second goal is to help inform the community of just how serious melanoma can be to a person and family.
