Changing seasonal temperatures are affecting game and fish

Systematic changes to average seasonal temperatures and precipitation are already affecting Midwest fish and wildlife populations. Unfortunately, more dramatic change is on the way.
Because future natural resources managers will no longer be able to use past conditions to predict the future, fish and wildlife scientists and Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agency (MAFWA) are exploring what can be done using a resist-accept-direct (RAD) framework.

Dean Paron named Minnesota’s stream habitat supervisor

Dean Paron’s 10-year-plus run as the Minnesota DNR’s Finland area fisheries supervisor officially came to an end recently – a “dream job” that the 53-year-old from Two Harbors thought he’d never want to leave. “It was a hard decision, to be honest,” he said. “But this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

In his new position, Paron said, he will “direct and coordinate” the state’s stream and river habitat projects – no small task in the nation’s 12th-largest state (nearly 87,000 square miles) that has more than 6,564 natural rivers and streams running nearly 70,000 miles.

This award recognizes efforts that reduce the impact of human activity on the environment while promoting tourism in Iowa.

Coyotes are becoming a bit too bold around the farm

Of all the canine furbearers, I get why some people mistake a coyote for a domestic dog.
Depending on the pelt coloration, and even vocalizations, domestic dogs and coyotes have some similarities. Behavior, however, shouldn’t be a common bond. Around our farm, coyotes have been a common sight for years. They howl from the fields at night – something I used to consider a neat serenade but now is more of a raucous annoyance.
