Lake Superior surveys show lake herring pull off a much-needed massive year-class in 2022

The Lake Superior fishery got a much-needed boost when lake herring pulled off an epic spawning event in 2022, surveys are revealing.
“Based on the info we’re getting from the (U.S. Geological Survey), it’s a banner year-class,” said Cory Goldsworthy, Lake Superior area fisheries supervisor for the state DNR. “It’s rivaling or exceeding the 1984 year-class.”
Lake herring, also known as cisco or tullibee, are the primary native prey species in Lake Superior.

Minnesota’s Pro Tip of the Week: Early heat changes walleye fishing

Here we are in June, and water temperatures already are in the low to mid-70s. Normally, we’re looking at these conditions come mid-July. With the early heat, you may find walleyes in places they don’t typically occupy until sometime in July, but we need to take notice of what’s happening.

Commentary: Southern Illinois schools set standard at bass tournaments

Since the inception of the Illinois High School Association’s state bass fishing tournament in 2009, southern Illinois schools have been proving it is the size of the fish, not the size of the school that counts.
Schools in the Deep South have been major players in the state series since Dylan Vaughn, Kaleb Gardner, and Lane Murphy of West Frankfort brought home the state championship trophy in 2009. In addition to West Frankfort, Elverado (2016) and Pinckneyville (2018) have won state titles.

Federal agency proposals would refresh Endangered Species Act

Three separate regulations proposed by a pair of federal agencies on June 21 would make it more difficult to remove wildlife from the endangered species list.
Among the things the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hope to do with the proposals is improve decision-making. The proposals call for the reinstatement of prior language reflecting congressional intent that listing, reclassification, and delisting determinations must be made “without reference to possible economic or other impacts of such determination.”
