North Dakota breeding duck survey a mix of highs, lows

On one hand, the North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s 76th annual spring breeding duck survey conducted in May showed an index of more than 3.4 million birds, up just 1.5% from last year, and that is good news.
Also good is the fact that the total number of wetlands, though down 26% from last year, still ranks as the seventh wettest spring in terms of wetland basins observed during the survey, during which four two-person crews traveled more than 800 miles of transects counting ducks and wetlands within 220 yards of the road.

Research shows ticks could spread CWD in deer population

A study published May 15, 2023, suggests that ticks could be a vector in spreading CWD among white-tailed deer. Heather Inzalaco, the lead researcher for the study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said she came across the issue, and once she started learning more about it, she didn’t look back.
The research concluded that prions in ticks from three CWD-positive deer heads had an infectious dose range of 0.3 to 42.4 per tick.

Crossbow sales heat up slowly in Minnesota after legislation change

It will take a couple of years to get a handle on how many more hunters will head to the woods with crossbows following recent legislation that allows crossbow use for all ages during Minnesota’s regular archery season.
If hunters are curious about what the effect of that legislation might be, so too are archery-gear proprietors around the state who are attempting to determine how many more crossbows to have on hand right now. So far, representatives from archery shops in Minnesota are reporting mixed customer interest as hunters learn about the new crossbow regulation.
