Lake Superior’s Stannard Rock offers opportunity at incredible lake trout, if you can get there

If you’ve never made the run to Stannard Rock to fish for lake trout, you owe it to yourself to take the trip.
It’s a uniquely surreal experience because of its location and the pristine fishery that every angler should experience in his or her lifetime. The history of Stannard Rock alone makes it a one-in-a-million destination. If you can get there, the chances are good you’ll catch the biggest trout of your life.

No-kill brown trout rule in Pennsylvania warrants caution

It is encouraging to learn of creative new initiatives in Pennsylvania trout management. For a long time, there was little real management in trout management. We raised lots of any kind of trout we could, then dumped them wherever they could live long enough for fishermen to have a go at them.
It amounted to a sort of industrialized outdoor recreation, with scant consideration of impacts on native stream ecosystems.

Pittsburgh stream turns red; not due to mine drainage

Nine Mile Run looked like tomato soup in early June, the result of a municipal drinking water pipe that ruptured in a nearby neighborhood.
The incident, which occurred June 4 during a prolonged dry weather spell, sent opaque, orangey-red water rushing over the run’s boulder clusters and rocks as it made its way to the Monongahela River. Cyclists, hikers and other visitors to Frick Park snapped cellphone images, took to social media and contacted the Nine Mile Run watershed group, UpstreamPittsburgh, to express alarm.

Now my son is constantly asking me to take him fishing. Often I just don’t have the time – or so I think. This is a shame because when I look back to when I was his age I realize how fortunate I was and that I have to try to be more like my father.
