Amid ‘late-ice’ talk, one topic often absent

Pore through the pre-fishing opener media reports across the northern half of Minnesota. Observe what anglers were saying in person or on social media. One relevant fact was nearly always missing!
So what was usually missing from all the late-ice banter? Cabin owners, lakeshore property owners, and resorters – folks who like to be “ready” for the fishing opener – were often time-squeezed. Indeed, they faced a late-ice “rat race” when it came to installing docks and boat lifts. Add to that their launching of and trying out boats.

Inaugural event raises $700,000 for South Dakota wildlife habitat

The thermometer might have suggested “summer,” but the fall hunting season was at the forefront of the minds of the 550 guests estimated to be gathered for the first-ever “Gala for a Century” held at the Sioux Falls Convention Center on June 3. The event was hosted by the Second Century Habitat Fund, a nonprofit organization established in 2019 to advocate for habitat development related to pheasant hunting in South Dakota.

Minnesota DNR plans rewrite of copper-nickel mining rules near BWCAW

Minnesota regulators have concluded that state rules governing where copper-nickel mines can be built are insufficient to protect the pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from noise and light pollution, creating another potential obstacle to the proposed Twin Metals mine in northeastern Minnesota.

Asian carp found jumping at Mississippi River’s Lock and Dam 5 in Minnesota

Asian carp have been seen jumping near Lock and Dam 5 during the past couple of weeks, and the development has generated new concerns about their future in Minnesota waters of the Mississippi River.
After state legislators discussed a barrier at Lock and Dam 5 during the 2023 legislative session, they eventually decided to fund surveys and research rather than building the barrier. Dr. Peter Sorensen, professor and carp expert at the University of Minnesota, said it’s concerning to see the number of carp near Lock and Dam 5, which is 10 miles northwest of Winona.

In Pennsylvania’s Presque Isle Bay, big bass are waiting

Being raised in Erie County, just one mile south of Lake Erie’s shoreline, I remember with unusual fondness, the June bugs (a winged beetle), that flew around our faces during sandlot baseball games, which continued until it was too dark to see the ball.
The memory came to me as I approached the parking area of Lampe Marina, in the city of Erie, for a June bass fishing trip, and I found myself strangely wondering if those June bugs would be suitable nutrition for Presque Isle bass. In my mind, there are no bass anywhere that rivals the average, Lake Erie bass. The population is good and average sizes are spectacular.

Sea Grant research could inform decisions on migrating songbirds

New research indicates nocturnal migrating songbirds might rely on archipelagos like North, Middle, and South Bass islands on Lake Erie as a navigation aid or resting place.

“Lake Erie is a barrier for migrating birds. It’s not huge like the Gulf of Mexico, but there are 30 to 40 miles between Ohio and Canada, and a bird that gets in trouble over water is going to have a large problem,” said Verner Bingman, distinguished research professor of neuroscience in the Department of Psychology at Bowling Green State University.
