Wisconsin’s tribal walleye spearing numbers down from 2022

Preliminary Wisconsin DNR numbers show a historically low number of walleyes speared across the ceded territory by the six Wisconsin Chippewa tribes this spring.
Data collected following activity the night of May 23 show a total of 27,097 walleyes reported, along with 169 muskies. These are preliminary numbers until the Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) and DNR are able to dissect the data after the season concludes.

Huge flathead catfish, potential Pennsylvania record, caught in Susquehanna River

Mike Wherley, of Fayetteville, Pa., caught a giant flathead catfish May 13 below the Safe Harbor Dam in the Susquehanna River. Weighing 66 pounds, 6 ounces, it reportedly will be the new Pennsylvania record for the species.
Wherley took the flathead to Columbia Bait and Tackle where it was weighed on a state-certified scale and verified by Jeff Schmidt, a waterways conservation officer with the Fish & Boat Commission. After filling out the paperwork, Wherley reportedly put the fish back in the livewell of his boat and drove it to Columbia River Park to be released back into the Susquehanna.

Young anglers shine during Iowa state championships

The third annual Bass Federation’s (TBF) Student Angler Federation (SAF) Iowa State Championship held May 20 for the first time ever on the Okoboji Chain of Lakes turned out to be quite a shootout in the High School Division (grades 9-12). High skies, sunshine and a light variable wind welcomed the contestants as they left the Emerson Bay Boat Ramp area at 7 a.m.

Pennsylvania poaching spree ends with more than 100 deer killed, six suspects charged

Six residents of Franklin County were criminally charged in late May for allegedly going on what the Pennsylvania Game Commission termed “a poaching spree,” killing more than 100 deer in six months.
They allegedly shot the deer and left most of them to rot over this past fall and winter. Commission law-enforcement officials called the actions a “complete disregard for our wildlife resources.”

Backyard and beyond: Arriving on schedule

In late April, it seemed as if spring weather was never going to arrive in my area, but there were positive signs. The minute ice began to leave lakes and ponds, water birds started flying in, right on schedule. Rich Carlson caught an elegant pair of red-breasted mergansers enjoying an early spring day.

Early season is a bass bonanza

If you think you’re in water that’s shallow enough, you’re probably still fishing too deep. I’ve caught countless bass this time of year within 6 inches of shore in water less than a foot deep. The shallower the water, the faster it warms up, especially on south facing bays because they’re the ones that get the most direct rays of sun. I guess you could say they’re like us. After a long, cold winter, the first days of warm weather is what we crave.
