Thinking big: Tips for catching impressive stream trout

Once the catch-and-kill opener passes in mid-April, stream trout fishing can become challenging.
You’ll contend with more anglers than ever, but also fluctuating water levels and clarity due to spring rains. Both can conspire to keep the bigger fish from haphazardly feeding whenever the whim strikes them. If your heart is set on catching the biggest fish in your chosen waterway, you’d better do things a little bit differently than your competition.

Remembering George Shiras, the “father of wildlife photography”

Trail cameras are a valuable tool used by many hunters. These eyes in the woods provide hunters and outdoor enthusiasts with a “24/7” look at game and non-game activity. What few folks don’t know is that the first night photo of an animal, a deer, was taken by a man named George Shiras on July 3, 1893.
And he did it with a flashlight. Well, not the kind of flashlight like those we use today. Shiras used an exploding charge of gunpowder – flashing light – to provide the illumination for his big box camera to capture images.

Here’s where to catch a ‘humpback’ in the Great Lakes area

If you do a quick online search for Alaska fly-fishing guides who target pink salmon, you’ll get plenty of hits.
After all, pink salmon are the most abundant Pacific salmon, and guides are more than willing to cater to clients who like to experience prodigious river runs of early-autumn fish that are often über-easy to catch with flies, with light tackle, and other gear more commonly associated with spring-creek trout. If you believe the hype, 100-fish days on some rivers are a real thing and not just marketing hyperbole. It can, and has, happened.
Try that same online experiment for the Great Lakes, however, and your search is far from a target-rich environment.
