Survival strategies among species can be perplexing

Why don’t northern deer change their coat colors with the seasons? Might it not be adaptive to grow a white coat in the winter?
Perhaps the difference between deer and rabbits is about predator avoidance. Snowshoe hares are hunted regularly by goshawks, the largest of North America’s bird-hunting hawks. Sharp eyesight allows goshawks to pick off movement, and a brown hare against a white background probably makes the goshawk’s job way easier.

Giveaway of Upper Sioux Agency State Park approaches reality

Legislation that would give a state park in southern Minnesota to a local Dakota Indian band and prompt the DNR to find replacement recreational land is now part of a massive environmental bill recently passed by the House.
The legislation is yet to be considered by the Senate. The House omnibus environment bill also contains $5 million for land-replacement purchase and other expenditures.

Minnesota’s shotgun zone for deer hunting mostly eliminated in Senate bill

The Senate bill eliminates the shotgun zone with the exception of Olmsted and Dodge counties. This means hunters can use rifles to hunt deer where in the past, the southern zone only allowed shotguns and pistols.
The amendment to eliminate the shotgun zone wasn’t in the House omnibus bill, so it will be a discussion point in conference committee.

Pro Tip of the Week: Think like a fish over looking at the calendar

My tip this week is to think like a fish. Fish don’t know what month it is, but they certainly know the season. I, like many, can get caught up in the calendar and remembering the fish I caught on certain dates. But this year, spring is slow to warm up, so why do I see crappie anglers on some metro-area lakes working shorelines?

Outdoor Observations: Would Michigan be better off with the annual firearms deer season opening on a Saturday?

That topic has been explored and dissected for years at deer camps, local watering holes, even barber shops. The bottom line is that some folks think it would be better and others like it the way it is – with the season opening a half-hour before sunrise on Nov. 15 and running through Nov. 30.
With 2023 being a regulation year for whitetail hunting – the regulation cycle is on a three-year rotation – the topic surfaced once again at the Natural Resources Commission meeting earlier this month in Lansing.
