Madison, Wis. Opening weekend of the Wisconsin firearms deer hunting season resulted in two hunting-related fatalities, one in Juneau County, the other in Rock County.

Rice Lake, Wis. An account has been set up at a Rice Lake bank to benefit the families of the victims and survivors of the shooting Sunday in Wisconsin. Six deer hunters were killed as a result of the incident and another two were wounded.

Donations can be sent to the “Rice Lake Hunters Survivors and Victims Fund” at the Dairy State Bank, 16 South Main Street, Rice Lake, WI 54868.

Tower, Minn. The Minnesota DNR’s Tower fisheries office has announced the opening of whitefish/cisco netting on Bear Island and Ely lakes in St. Louis County and Ojibway Lake in Lake County.

The opening date was Nov. 25, and the closing date is Sunday, Dec. 26. A whitefish netting license is required. Several other regulations apply and can be found on the DNR’s web site at www.dnr.state.mn.us under “fishing regulations.” For more information, call the DNR fisheries office in Tower at (218) 753-2580, ext. 221.
