July 15: Turtle season opens statewide through Nov. 30 for those species that are not listed as endangered or threatened. July 20: Hunter’s choice application deadline.

Grand Rapids, Minn. The Minnesota Deer Hunters Association (MDHA) board of directors has asked its three-member ethics committee to examine all sides of Babe Winkelman’s citation last deer season for using a two-way radio to hunt deer.

Winkelman is MDHA’s celebrity spokesperson. He and two other individuals in his hunting party were cited for using two-way radios last fall, and Winkelman eventually agreed to an Alford plea agreement. Shawn Perich

Madison, Wis. Preliminary figures show hunters in Wisconsin registered 47,373 turkeys during the state’s 2004 spring wild turkey season. That’s a 10-percent increase over the 2003 harvest of 42,970 birds. The statewide hunter success rate remained stable

A total of 185,000 permits were available for the Wisconsin spring turkey season in 43 turkey management zones and 12 state parks. More than 26,000 hunters received second permits. Minnesota set a new turkey harvest record this spring by killing about 8,300 birds. The state’s estimated turkey population is about 50,000 birds.

Brainerd, Minn. Brainerd’s “Fishing Has No Boundaries” organization hopes to double the turnout of last year when it hosts its second fishing event Aug. 27-28. Again this year, the event will be hosted by Camp Confidence Learning Center near Brainerd.

Last year, during the group’s inaugural event, 35 people with disabilities took part in the fishing event. Even more volunteers helped with the function. The fishing event is not a contest, fund-raiser, or tournament; it’s just an opportunity for people with disabilities to enjoy a day on the lake, organizers say. People interested in volunteering
