Sheds from potential record moose found

’03 national grouse hunt recovers birds with WNV

Field Editor Grand Rapids, Minn. A sampling of ruffed grouse and woodcock killed near Grand Rapids last autumn at the Ruffed Grouse Society’s annual national hunt found a significant number of birds tested positive for exposure to the West Nile Virus (WNV). The findings marked the first time WNV had been documented in ruffed grouse

St. Paul Pheasants Forever founder Jeff Finden and Minneapolis lawyer Robert Beugen have been re-elected to the 17-member PF board of directors. Three other members were re-elected, and Dr. James Call, of Deerwood, Minn., was a newly elected board member

Finden was the first and only CEO of PF until he retired in 2000. Howard Vincent was promoted from CFO to CEO that year. Beugen was elected to his fifth term. During PF’s year-end meetings, the organization also announced membership grew 9 percent during the most recent fiscal year, to about 108,000 members. Habitat expenditures

Sartell, Minn. Wildlife artist Scot Storm, of Sartell, winner of the 2004-05 Federal Duck Stamp contest, will be honored Friday, July 16, during “Artist Hometown Day.”

Not only is Storm the reigning Federal Duck Stamp contest winner with his redhead painting, he also won the 2004 Minnesota Duck Stamp contest and the Oklahoma Duck Stamp contest. Artist Hometown Day is sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Proceeds from the event are matched by the federal government and go toward

State wants crack at national forests

Correspondent Madison-The state of Wisconsin currently manages or assists in managing 3.2 million acres of state and county forests across the state. Now it wants to use its expertise on federal lands. State Rep. Don Friske (R-Merrill) announced to the Governor’s Council on Forestry, at its June 17 meeting, that he and 24 other legislators
