With deteriorating ice conditions comes fewer – if any – “hard-water” fishing opportunities. But trout season is right around the corner.

The designs of both flies are optimal for getting deep and getting there quickly.

On Lake Michigan, recent winds stirred up the lake and likely disrupted existing patterns. Mixed bag of coho, a few browns and lake trout have been caught.

Early spring crappie fishing is heating up, especially on lakes such as Blue Marsh, Foster Joseph Sayers, Hammond, Ontelaunee, Wallenpaupack, Wilhelm, Glendale, Cross Creek, Green Lick, Kahle, Keystone, Stevens, Wilmore, Wilma, Mammoth and Briar Creek.

This week’s snowmelt and high water is the likely primer for the spring steelhead run.
