New York Fishing Report – March 12-19, 2021
This week’s snowmelt and high water is the likely primer for the spring steelhead run.

This week’s snowmelt and high water is the likely primer for the spring steelhead run.

Ice fishing season winding down, although there are still a few opportunities out there, mostly in the Upper Peninsula, where the perch and walleye bite remains strong.

On the St. Joseph River (below Twin Branch Dam), in the past week, almost 600 steelhead went through the South Bend Fish Ladder. With water temps in the mid-40s, the run is just getting started

Many waters in the southern portion of the lower peninsula are transitioning to open water due to warmer temperatures. Ice fishing is still being conducted in the northern portions of the state at this time.

Ice fishing has ended in southern Michigan, but continues in the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula.

On Lake Michigan, most of the lake ice is gone, and some anglers are getting out and catching early coho and a couple browns.
In March, there still are plenty of locations where you can fish for walleyes, pike, and much more.

Ice cover is fading fast and fishable ice is drawing to a close.

Fly tying is an addictive hobby, to be sure, a place-setting with various intended purposes. The activity is a perfect excuse to avoid thinking about a frozen steelhead stream.
