It was an epic week for big fish. Saw some cooling trends with weather, which was great. Fish are holding to certain spots, but we’re changing approaches – slightly – to trigger some bigger fish.

Mid- to late-summer fishing a little slow. Lake trout and salmon going strong on bigger lakes.

The southern Illinois spot has a solid bass population and an improving channel cat reputation.

Trout Lake is still a worthy destination for the paddling angler who doesn’t mind a few obstacles, or someone who wants to shore fish.

It’s no secret that flukes are one of the best smallmouth baits on the market and can be fished all sorts of ways. Here are a few rigging options for fishing flukes.

“Tackle” Terry Tuma suggests starting out by working the outside weed line, usually with plastics. Using a wacky worm jig, work from the inside and then back out to the weed edge, and then turn

Channel bass tend to bite more consistently throughout the day compared to weed fish.

Catching big bass – and the walleye bite continues to be strong.

On the walleye front, several 5- to 8-pound fish have been caught in the last two weeks, with one pushing 10 pounds.
