Diamond continues to support a diverse fish community and popular sport fishery.

Chalk Hills supports a good fishery with evidence of natural reproduction for several species. The walleye and smallmouth populations appear strong.

And while Round is known as a good walleye lake, the lake’s smallmouth bass may well have the best reputation right now because those beasts are attracting the most interest.

Walleyes remain at low densities, but provide another option for anglers.

“What attracted me to this stretch of the river was the smallmouth bass fishing.”

The walleye size structure has changed significantly between survey periods and has increased as abundance has declined.

Just one hit and one fish, but it was enough to get us thinking about coming back as often as possible in spring and fall.

As an A2 muskie lake, these waters should provide consistent action and may have potential to produce some larger fish.

The most recent DNR survey turned up 15 fish species, including 2,471 walleyes averaging 15.3 inches and 1,861 pike averaging 19.4 inches.
