With nicer weather reportedly on the way, look for crappies and panfish to be staged just outside those traditional spring locations, but expect them to start making a big push to the shallows as water
There were some pretty good crappie reports last week in areas with open water. Many lakes all around the state with open water or some open-water areas have started producing crappies and a few bluegills.
Look for perch, bluegills, and crappies to now be set up on shallow flats and weedbeds. Walleye fishing on the big rivers is getting going.
While the number of people venturing out continues to drop as we head toward the end of the ice-fishing season, panfish and crappie reports aren’t bad and there was a definite slide into shallower water
With the inland walleye, bass, and northern pike seasons now closed, most people are focusing on panfish. Generally, crappie action has been better than bluegill activity in most areas for size and numbers.
The most successful walleye anglers also seem to be downsizing their baits, implementing jigging baits and tip-ups, and staying on the move. Panfish reports have been a bit off as well.
