Trout anglers on ponds and streams are enjoying some productive outings and things could be happening a bit sooner thanks to some unseasonably warm weather in early April that triggered ice-out.

In search of salmon and lake trout. No real reports on trout yet, but stream action should be picking up.

Lots of reports of steelheads being caught.

Mid-April should find trout anglers in all their glory. A few exceptions may be at higher elevations where ice-out tends to come later than other parts of the state. Trout stocking should also be intensifying

April 1 is a New York angler’s holiday as it is the traditional opening day of trout season. One never knows what opening day will bring. Location pending, the weather could be more like spring,

With deteriorating ice conditions comes fewer – if any – “hard-water” fishing opportunities. But trout season is right around the corner.

If you have the opportunity to fish a trout pond just after it opens up, it could be magical, so have your gear ready for April 1.

Ice is still good, at least on this lake. A look at ice conditions in other parts of the state, too, as ice fishing winds down.
