The open-water season is winding down, yet anglers continue to report quality walleye catches here.

Some browns and steelhead and Atlantics already reported in the catches, so for this early in the season, that’s an excellent sign for things yet to come.

The incredible walleye action off Cattaraugus Creek is slowing down, though fish still readily available in 50-75 feet of water.

No matter if you’re in the woods or on the water, autumn is a special time of year. A look at the hunting and fishing report from across New York on Sept. 28, 2023.

By September standards and with a recent dry period, the salmon action is pretty good.

In the south basin here, the deeper middle flats remains productive for walleye.

For the tributary action, look for rivermouth and downriver action first followed by later-on upstream fast-water action. Consistent cool weather and good water flows are usually the ticket for things to get going.

Both the charters and rec anglers have been doing well here.

West has been best for walleye catches for some time now.
