With deteriorating ice conditions comes fewer – if any – “hard-water” fishing opportunities. But trout season is right around the corner.
If you have the opportunity to fish a trout pond just after it opens up, it could be magical, so have your gear ready for April 1.
Ice is still good, at least on this lake. A look at ice conditions in other parts of the state, too, as ice fishing winds down.
In New York’s fish and game world, March 15 is a big day as it marks the closing of fishing seasons for walleyes, northern pike, tiger muskellunge and pickerel.
Longer days and a sun that sits higher in the sky does not bode well for ice conditions.
In search of lake trout. Finally getting ice on some of these lakes that have been holding out up to this point. So where are fish being caught?
Ice fishing activity is picking up with good ice on smaller lakes and ponds, including in the southern tier and in some shallow areas of popular lakes.
It has been below freezing across much of the state this month, which is good news for ice anglers.
