For info and entertainment, here are some outdoors podcast options for you

I love podcasts. It wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest I’m addicted to them.
I listen to them daily. I enjoy the immediacy of the spoken word. My choices cover a range of topics, many of which have a newsy, current-events orthodoxy. Others don’t. Some are nerdy, deep-in-the-weeds dives into topics that interest me and nurture my natural curiosity.
The beauty of the podcast world is its variety.

Snow geese on their way to the Dakotas, Minnesota ahead of schedule this year

If you’re a spring snow goose hunter and you don’t have your gear ready to roll, the time to do so is nigh.
Spring-like weather south of Minnesota and the Dakotas throughout most of February has millions of snow geese on the move, with birds already migrating as far north as South Dakota.

Spring snow goose migration offers sight to behold, hunting to savor

Roughly 25 years ago, during the first or second year of the special spring snow goose season, I was sitting at my desk at the Aberdeen American News, a daily newspaper in eastern South Dakota.
It was a sunny day in late March, and a visitor had arrived and wanted to chat. He wasn’t an angry reader but a budding British author named William Fiennes, the distant cousin, I would later learn, of acclaimed actors Ralph Fiennes and Joesph Fiennes.

Minnesota DNR report features lengthy list of recommendations to address live-bait shortages

A new legislative report to address statewide seasonal live-bait shortages recently was released by the Minnesota DNR, the recommendations of which the agency hopes will help mitigate the multifaceted problem going forward.
The 2023 Minnesota Legislature directed the state DNR to submit the recommendations “to ensure a viable Minnesota-grown bait supply” as shortages have become more commonplace in recent years.

Minnesota’s Jon Schneider gets Ducks Unlimited lifetime achievement award

When you open the door to Jon Schneider’s long-past days as a young waterfowler, it’s obvious he’s a man who takes pleasure in the details.
A native of Orchard Park, N.Y., Schneider, 57, and his father hunted a lot when he was a kid, especially for diving ducks near Long Point, Ontario, where they’d escape to hunt after Thanksgiving dinner.
“After dinner at my uncle’s house, we’d say thank you and gracefully depart after the dishes were done,” said Schneider, chuckling.

Retailers, bait dealers and anglers alike lament warmth’s return to Minnesota

Jeff Byrne has heard it all. Byrne, the longtime owner of Cabin Fever Sporting Goods in Victoria, Minn., in the southwest metro area, sells bait and fishing tackle, as well as other outdoor gear, including archery equipment. Propane, too.
“I had ice-fishing customers come in (last) weekend who told me they were making tee times for later this coming week,” he said on Monday afternoon.

Minnesota DNR report shows wetland gains made during past 15 years

From 2006 to 2020, Minnesota saw a net gain of 43,000 acres of wetlands, most of which were emergent wetlands found in the past six years in agricultural areas that tend to show up after periods of higher precipitation.
That’s one of the key findings of the Wetland Status and Trends Monitoring Report released recently by the Minnesota DNR. The report, DNR officials say, suggests the state’s Wetland Conservation Act – a law enacted in 1991 requiring no net loss of wetlands – is serving its intended purpose.

Minnesota’s famed wildlife artist, Jim Killen, dies at 89

Jim Killen was known to look at life as a painting in waiting.
“It starts with a dream and a blank canvas and it’s anybody’s guess how it will turn out,” he’d say. “Then brushstroke by brushstroke with time and care, something beautiful starts to take shape …”
Killen’s life certainly took shape – and beautifully so.

Minnesota DNR seeking public input on early teal hunt, waterfowl season splits through upcoming survey

The Minnesota DNR is preparing to roll out a general waterfowl-hunter survey. It’s an effort to collect information on a range of topics, most notably hunter opinions on an early September teal season and the state’s three-tier hunting-zone system.
The agency, which conducts such surveys roughly every three years, is slated to mail 4,000 survey postcards this week to randomly selected waterfowl hunters who purchased state duck stamps last year.
