Years ago when Penn State Extension offered a course on how to process venison, it was mainly attended by hunters who wanted to do a better job preparing their harvest for the table.
Ten years after the course was discontinued, it’s coming back this summer. This time, however, the demand is a bit different.
There is no such thing as unspoiled wilderness in Pennsylvania.
Not anymore.
Pristine areas untouched by man no longer exist. There are places that no matter how remote and rugged they are, man’s impact can be seen and felt. And it’s not necessarily the result of the typical forms of encroachment – urban sprawl, natural gas drilling, timbering, etc. This impact originates with harmless intentions yet a high degree of naivety.

As a hunter and angler, Gary Gronkowski cherishes the pristine outdoor landscape that surrounds his home in Luzerne County, Pa.
And he also despises the litter and illegal dumping that ruin those places. That’s why Gronkowski joined the Nanticoke Conservation Club in 1992, and later became its president in 2004 – a position he still holds today.
A recent legislative hearing to discuss the 2019 audit of the Pennsylvania Game Commission veered into other concerns as legislators heard from new agency Executive Director Steve Smith.
During the June 3 hearing with the House Game and Fisheries Committee, Smith did outline several recommendations from the audit that the agency addressed, but legislators had other questions dealing with the Saturday deer season opener, gas royalty payments and problems with transparency.

The bill repeals the prohibition on Sunday hunting, and it recently passed the House Game and Fisheries Committee, paving the way for a floor vote. In committee, every Democrat member voted for the bill, while all Republicans were unified in opposition. But the issue with the bill isn’t really about Sunday hunting. The top Republican on the House Game and Fisheries Committee believes the recent meeting to appoint Stephen Smith as the executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission possibly violated the Sunshine Act, and he’s asking for the governor to get involved.
A spokesman for the Game Commission said commissioners followed the law when Smith was “appointed to the post during an executive session, followed by a special meeting when the move was finalized by a board vote.”

One of the main reasons we hunt for deer is food.
Sure, hunting to survive isn’t a necessity in this day and age, but for many of us venison is a delicacy, and it tastes even better when one completes the full circle – from hunt, harvest and to table. Now, that doesn’t mean an empty freezer at the end of the season equates to a wasted effort. While putting venison on the table is a motivating factor to hit the woods, the experience of the hunt is what truly drives us to pick up a rifle or bow.

The effort to fill the District 1 seat on the Pennsylvania Game Commission board continues, and it’s unclear if an appointment will be made before the July 12-13 meeting.
District 1 includes Butler, Clarion, Crawford, Erie, Forest, Lawrence, Mercer, Venango and Warren counties and is currently held by Commissioner Kristen Koppenhafer. Her four-year term expired on Nov. 27, 2023, and Koppenhafer has been serving under a six-month extension, which will conclude on May 27.
Stephen Smith’s tenure as the new executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission is being challenged by a state legislator, who said the appointment violates the state Sunshine Act.
Smith was appointed to the post by the Game Commission board during an executive session on April 30. He replaced Bryan Burhans, who resigned amid ethical questions regarding a side business he was running. The appointment of Smith during an executive session was confirmed in an agency news release.
