Steve Sarley: Here’s to hoping the Chicago Bears drafted a good hunter, angler (and football player)

As I am writing this, I am also thinking about who my beloved Chicago Bears are going to draft this year, who is going to help propel them to their next Super Bowl appearance.
That’s right, I said it. We Bear fans are probably the most delusional of all Chicago sports fans. Every year I have the belief that my Monsters of the Midway are playoff bound – nothing is going to stop us. By the end of the season, I scratch my head and wonder what went wrong.

Steve Sarley: Illinois’ Chris Taurisano hanging up well-worn fishing guide cap

I see a lot of things on social media that surprise me but nothing as shocking as what I saw on my Facebook feed on a recent day. It blew me away. It was from the page of my good friend, Chris Taurisano, the best fishing guide in northern Illinois. He is retiring.

Steve Sarley: Missing turkeys return to Wheaton, Ill.

The Illinois spring turkey season is getting ready to start, so it seems like one last salute to the Wheaton turkey mystery seems fitting.
“The Case of the Missing Turkeys” was a real blast for me to research and write. I cannot believe all of the emails I received about the topic. It was the most I ever received on a single subject. I am happy to report that not all of Wheaton’s wild turkeys have vanished.

Steve Sarley: Fishing classes from Spence Petros can’t be replaced when it comes to angling education

I ended my last column asking how fishermen learn how to be better in this day and age. Spence Petros, who got me started in this business, doesn’t hold his classes anymore and I don’t know of anything similar. I asked you to help me out and let me know what you think are the best ways for anglers to become better at what they do.
I began to ponder the question and I was shocked to realize that there has never been anything like the Spence Petros Fishing Classes I was extremely lucky to have been a student in.

Steve Sarley: Getting a fishing education isn’t quite the process it once was

Someone recently asked me how I got into the fishing media business. Funny story, I think.
It was in the latter years of the past century. Sounds incredibly historic, doesn’t it. I had always enjoyed fishing as a pastime. When I wasn’t actually fishing, I enjoyed reading about the sport. My bedroom night table and the rack in my bathroom were piled high with fishing magazines. I contacted a small regional fishing newspaper about the possibility of my writing an article for them.

Steve Sarley: Readers share many of their turkey thoughts, experiences

I talked to a number of Illinois Outdoor News readers at the Schaumburg Fishing Show about the missing turkeys. That shocked me. I love meeting readers and talking to them at the shows, but the subject is almost always about fishing or my animosity for Illinois Governor JB Pritzker. I’ve never engaged readers in turkey talk before.

Steve Sarley: Wildlife and ‘vigilantism’ not a wise combination – anywhere

Thank you all for putting up with my lengthy tale about the disappearing wild turkey flock here in my hometown of Wheaton, Ill.
I enjoyed writing it and I was certain that humans had eliminated the turkeys, but I was wrong. I was shocked to get mail that said that some folks thought it was OK to eliminate the turkey flock if it was damaging the paint jobs on cars by pecking with their beaks. I can’t figure out the rationale in that argument.

Steve Sarley: NWTF says suburban turkeys near Chicago likely fell victim to coyotes – or age

I’m going to conclude a story (Finally, I can hear you say!) I call “The Case of the Missing Turkeys.” I began my mysterious tale here in Illinois Outdoor News and I’m ready to wrap it up.I’m going to conclude a story (Finally, I can hear you say!) Steve Sarley: Conspiracies go wild on missing turkeys from Illinois suburb

I’m going to continue with a story I am calling “The Case of the Missing Turkeys.” I began my mysterious tale in the last issue of Illinois Outdoor News.
I had written about how I had discovered a rather large number of wild turkeys living in the suburb of Wheaton. The birds seemed to be using Cantigny Park’s beautiful acreage as their home base. I had seen many birds in the park and in the areas close by.
