I’m trying not to let a sore back or the fact that I’ve yet to harvest a deer despite many days of serious effort affect my mood, and I don’t think it has.
But when I saw the DEC’s press release on the adoption of regulations that allow license-issuing agents to “recover costs associated with printing and mailing paper sporting licenses and other items” sold through the state’s Automated Licensing System, I rolled my eyes.

A pair of New York natives, both legends in the turkey-calling world, will be part of a trio of individuals to be inducted into the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Grand National Calling Championships Hall of Fame, NWTF officials have announced.
Ernie Calandrelli, of Lewiston (Niagara County), and Jim Pollard, a former Corning (Steuben County) resident now residing across the border in Lawrenceville, Pa., will join champion caller and TV hunting personality Mark Drury of Missouri as the sixth Hall of Fame class of inductees.

I was pretty confident I’d kill a deer this season, especially as the whitetail rut kicked into high gear. I just wasn’t sure whether it would be with my crossbow or my Dodge Ram.
It’s true. In my decision to abandon a tree stand just up the hill from our home, saving the spot for my wife, Paula, during rifle season, I resigned myself to a 40-minute drive down the road into an Albany Township, Pa., hot-spot I was sure would yield at least a doe, but perhaps a buck or bear.

Stid Hill Wildlife Management Area worth the effort for New York hunters

When you visit Ontario County’s Stid Hill Wildlife Management Area, you’ll quickly see the WMA’s name is well deserved.
About 150 acres of the WMA along Route 64 is gentle or moderately sloped, but the tract becomes very steep to the east, climbing up 500 feet to the hilltop. Above the steep hillside, however, there’s more reasonable terrain with moderate rolling slopes.

Her AKC-registered name is “Sayre Hill’s Eight is Enough,” a laughable take on the fact that Molly is the eighth Labrador retriever over the years to enter our home.
Laughable, because we know there will likely be more. That said, Paula and I take these puppy decisions seriously. The timing has to be right. Calendars are cleared to allow for a singular focus on bonding and getting control of the little ball of fur early to avoid training challenges down the road.
